March News: All Good Festival, SXSW, Dark Star Orchestra & more

Filed under: Newsletters — Cpt. Jack @ 4:51 pm
JamBase Monthly Newsletter- Go See Live Music
Feeling vernal yet? Spring is just around the corner – March 20 to be exact – and even though rain and snow keep falling in many parts of the U.S. one can already pick up a distinct crispness in the air, something green and new and reawakening. For the JamBase faithful this signals it’s time to air out our camping gear and start planning where we’ll be getting barefoot and fancy-free as warmer days and music packed fests loom. Musicians are getting green, too. In the meantime, as we wait, perhaps impatiently, for Bonnaroo and High Sierra, there’s an awful lot of great rock ‘n’ roll pouring out in 2010 to help pick up our heels right now. Next week we’ll be heading down to the annual SXSW Music Festival to immerse ourselves in the best and brightest of what’s to come and bring as much as we can muster back to you. From the recent barnburners from Stockholm Syndrome to the rib-sticking pleasure of Backyard Tire Fire’s latest to Big Light’s exciting debut and even a NEW Jimi Hendrix album, it seems like something many folks said would never last continues to thrive. It gives one hope as we leap forward into this challenging year.

Bridges & Blinking Lights

We get a lot of CDs and digital downloads sent our way. It’s to be expected and always appreciated. For many of us at JamBase, it’s exactly why we got into this business: Free Music. However, the constant influx of albums pile up on our desks and fill our hard drives at such a rapid rate that it often makes it difficult to find the diamonds in the rough. Hailing from Denton, TX, Bridges & Blinking Lights’ sophomore effort, Heroes, Guns & Snakes (self-released on March 2) stood out immediately. Having never even heard of the band, it was the promo sticker mentioning My Morning Jacket that caught our attention, and while we hear some of that early MMJ fire, it sounds more like Blind Melon had Shannon Hoon kept it together. There’s enough psychedelic guitar work, nifty time changes and jam-worthy instrumental sections to appeal to the late night festival crowd, but it’s perfectly balanced with giant hooks and radio-ready rockers to grab the indie crowd as well. For a band that came out of nowhere and has only been around since 2006, Bridges & Blinking Lights is one to watch. Check them out!

JamBase Monthly Newsletter- Go See Live Music

With half the country covered in snow and the Winter Olympics on TV you might not be thinking about festival season. Then again, if you’ve been reading JamBase perhaps you are. In the past few weeks we’ve seen a bunch of amazing lineup announcements, reminding us that sunny days and star filled nights aren’t too far off. The usual suspects like Bonnaroo, All Good, Wakarusa, Coachella, Summer Camp, High Sierra and Mountain Jam all delivered talent in the manner we’ve come to expect. And though some big players in the festival world closed their doors for the summer, there are new doors opening; none more exciting than the Hangout Beach Festival. Making its debut this May on the white beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama, this brand new event is sure to win over fans and bring a whole new scene to the Gulf Coast. With Noise Pop starting next week, SXSW next month, and Wanee and Jazz Fest just around the bend, over here at JamBase we’re ready to shed our jackets, kick off our shoes and dive into festival season!

Uncle Pooch
artist photo
What truly glorious, sandblasting heaviness! Seattle’s instru-metal Uncle Pooch are beatifically hard – real dark of night, one toke over the line stuff, creepin’ outta the shadows of your subconscious stuff – that they puncture with curious, oddly beveled noise and a strange, sinewy electronic wind instrument (courtesy of saxophonist Greg Sinibaldi, who delivers buckets of texture & tone), Middle Eastern left turns and numerous other elements that keep one guessing. The quartet is completed by Denali Williams (drums), Shane Smith (bass) and Tony Stevens (guitar), all of whom do double duty in funk juggernaut The Staxx Brothers. With a name playfully lifted from David Lynch and the blemished, untamed heart to match, Uncle Pooch delivers a tasty balance of prime stoner rock, jazz inflected metal, Downtown NYC shenanigans (parts sound like Zorn’s Naked City if they smoked herb), and good old fashioned thrash. Their debut, Conduct Unbecoming, packs a wallop but you’ll gladly dive back into the pit when they barrel into each pulsating soundscape.
